I have to be honest, I’m hardly convinced that Area 51 is a bastion
of extraterrestrial anything. But with that said, there are a lot of
pretty strange testimonies from government employees and contractors who
have worked there. Everyone knows the place exists, and the same
employees and contractors have confirmed it is a real facility. These
confirmations have come even while the position of the United States
government was historically to deny the existence of the installation
altogether. What’s gone on there? I couldn’t say. But by 2013, no one
but the U.S. government was still denying its existence.
That policy of outright denial changed
this past August
when the CIA nonchalantly admitted the existence of the base, stating
that it had been used as a secret air craft testing site. This seemed to
give the green light to a presidential acknowledgement of the facility.
In the past this was an off-limits subject… even as a joke.
Last Sunday, however, at the annual Kennedy Center Honors reception
President Obama said that the this focal point of so many conspiracy
theories is something that all presidents are asked about almost
immediately after taking office.
“When you first become president, one of the questions that people
ask you is, ‘What’s really going on in Area 51?’” Obama said to laughter
at White House event.
“When I wanted to know, I’d call Shirley MacLaine.”
The audience approvingly laughed, but interestingly, in making the joke, Obama confirmed the base’s existence.
The Oscar-winning actress Shirley MacLaine, for her part, had claimed
to have seen UFOs and extraterrestrial beings. From the sound of
things, she had asked the president about the base at some point before
the event began.
Whether he realized the historical nature of his confirmation
in advance
or not, Obama commented on it, saying “I think I just became the first
president to ever publicly mention Area 51. How’s that, Shirley?”
apparently nodding to the off-stage discussion between the two.
Regardless of what one thinks about the nature of UFO sightings, or
extraterrestrial this-and-that, it is clear that something is going on
at the facility. Moreover, by the CIA’s own admission, something had
been going on all along, even while the government denied the facility
even existed. Whatever that
something is, the government seems to be opening up about it, a little at a time…
Why now? Could there by more that they haven’t revealed? Those are questions that remain to be answered.
